The sunnan before going to sleep

The Sunnah way of going to bed:
Let find out what are Sunnah etiquettes of going to sleep...

1- Recite Bismillah: Say بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ( In the name of Allah) before closing the doors of the house, before covering the utensils with food in them, switch off/ Turn off the fire lights etc. (Bukhari)

2- Dust the bed: When one of you goes to bed, let him dust the bed because he doesn't know what comes into it before or after him. (Bukhari 6320, Muslim 2714).

3.Miswaak: To make Miswaak before retiring to bed even if one has already made it for Isha salaat. (Kitabut Tahaarah and Sunnats)

4-Be in the state of purity: “If you come to your bed(I.e go to sleep)
Then perform Wudoo. (Al Bukhari 6318, Muslim 2727,2728)

5-Sleep on your right side: “……then lie down on your right side(Al Bukhari 6311, Muslim 2710)
Place the right hand under the right cheek: When he(SAWW) wants to sleep, he placed his right hand under his right cheek. ( Al Bukhari 6314, Muslim 5045)

5-Say supplication before sleeping:
"بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا".
‘In Your name O Allah, I live and die.’ (Muslim 4/ 2083)

6-If afraid to go to sleep or feeling lonely or depressed then recite:
"أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ، وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ، وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ".
(I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, from the evil of His slaves and from the taunts of devils and from their presence). (Abu Dawud 4/12, At- Tirmidhi 3/171)

7- Sleeping early and Waking up early:
Narrated Aisha "He used to sleep early at night, and get up in its last part to pray, and then return to his bed. When the Mu'adh-thain pronounced the Adhan, he would get up. If he was in need of a bath he would take it; otherwise, he would perform ablution and then go out (for the prayer)." (Bukhari 1146)
Having a power nap(Qaylulah) for 20/ 30 min (Qalulah) during the day time is good for reducing the stress, enhancing the memory, relaxing the mind and boosting the energy. Even only 10 minutes make difference. Mid day nap helps to wakeup for Tahajud prayer at night. (However too much sleeping and too much eating is disliked by Salaf, these two qualities harden the heart and make one lazy for worship.)

“If anyone of you becomes drowsy whilst he is praying, let him sleep until he is refreshed, because if any one of you prays whilst he is drowsy he may not understand what he is saying and he may to pray for forgiveness but may insult himself by mistake instead.” (al-Bukhaari, 212; Muslim, 786).

( Note: Al-Nawawi said, “this is general and applies to both obligatory and to naafil prayers offered at night and during the day. This is our view and the view of the majority. But he should not delay an obligatory prayer until the time for it is over. Al-Qaadi said: Maalik and a group of scholars interpreted it as referring to naafil prayers done at night, because that is the usual time for sleep.)

Sunnahs of Entering and Leaving the toilet

The Sunnah way of Entering and leaving the toilets or bathroom:
1- Du’aa before entering the toilet:
 اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ
“Allah, I seek protection in You from the male and female devils.”
(Al Bukhari 142, Muslim 375)

 The wisdom behind this sunnah:
A toilet is a filthy place where the devils dominate by Allaahs will and one should not verbally remember Allah in the toilet, so the Shaytaan takes advantage if one does not remember Him, because the remembrance of Allaah drives them away. So the command to seek refuge with Allaah before that means that one will be protected from the shaytaan until he comes out.

2-Entering with left foot: Enter in the toilet with the left foot first and exiting with the right one (There is no particular evidence for this sunnah exactly! but scholars agree that we should use the right as general for all good things, and use left for other. Narrated by Hafsa, ”That Prophet (SAWW) used his right hand for taking his food and drink and used his left hand for other purposes”, and so from the sunnah using right foot to entering the mosque and left one to get out of it, so it's a reverse qiyas.)

3- Exit Du’aa:
‘Aa’ishah narrated: When the Prophet (SAWW) exited the toilet, he used to say “Ghufraanaka”.
“I seek your forgiveness”. (Abou Dawood 30)

4-Do not face towards Qibla:
Narrated by Abu Aiyub Al Ansari
Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "If anyone of you goes to an open space* for answering the call of nature he should neither face nor turn his back towards the Qibla. (Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 1.146)
(*Ruling is same for in the house/ toilet.)

5-Use left hand for cleaning:
Narrated by Abu Hurairah,
"The Messenger of Allah (SAWW) said: 'When any one of you cleans himself, he should not clean himself with his right hand. Let him clean himself with his left hand.'" (Hasan)  (Ibn Majjah, 312)

6- Purify yourself after relieving:
When a person relieves himself, he must cleanse himself of impurities either with water, which is best and most perfect or with something other than water which will remove the impurities, such as toilet paper, fabric, stones or something else. ( Muslim 271, 262)

Sunnan of Meeting the people

The Sunnah way to Meet the people:
1- Tasleem when you greet: the Prophet (SAWW) was asked, which type of Islam is
the best(in terms of actions)?; and he (SAWW) answered: to feed people and to say salaam to those you know and those you do not know. ( Al Bukhari 12 and Al Muslim 39)
A man approached the Prophet (SAWW) and said; Assalamu Alaikum (peace upon you), the Prophet (SAWW) replied to the salaam and after the man sat down, the Prophet(SAWW) said: that was ten.
Then another man came and said Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullah (peace and mercy of Allah upon you), the Prophet (SAWW) said: that was twenty. then the third man came and said, Assalamu Alaikum wa rhamatullah wa barakatuh (peace and mercy and blessings of Allah upon you) the Prophet (SAWW) said: that was thirty. ( Abu Dawood 5195 and At Tirmithi 2689).
Benefits of this Sunnah:
The person who says entire Salaam, he gets 30 blessings. Look how easy to earn the reward by uttering just 3 small words.
1- Say Tasleem when you leave:
When one of you comes to a gathering, then say Salaam and if someone decides to leave, then say salaam and the first does not have more right then the last.(Abou Dawood 5208, Muslim 2706)
2- Smile:
The Prophet(SAWW)said; do not consider any of good thing as insignificant; even meeting your brother with just a smile.
 (Al Muslim 2626)
4-Shaking hands: our Prophet (SAWW) said:  whenever two Muslims meet each other, shake the hands, Allah would forgive them before their departure « ( Abu Dawood5212, Al Tirmithi and Muslim 2727)
5-Speak good or remain silent: The Prophet(SSAWW) said; He who believes in Allah and the last day must either speak good or remain silent.(Bukhari 6136)

Sunnah recitation before sleeping

What we should recite before sleeping?
1- Recite Aayat ul Kursi (I.e.255th verse of the Qur’an) before sleeping:

Allah! There is no God besides Him, the Ever-Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never encompass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He never tires of guarding and preserving them. And He is the Highest, the Tremendous(Supreme).
 (Surah Al Baqarah 2;255)
The benefit of this Sunnah:
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: ‘Whoever reads this when he lies down to sleep will have a guardian from Allah remain with him and Satan will not be able to come near him until he rises in the morning. (Al-Bukhari 5010).

2- Reciting last 2 aayahs of Surah Al Baqarah:
Never go to sleep without having recited these two verses. Therefore, you should make a special effort to learn these verses, and at the same time, teach your family members too.

The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say: "We make no distinction between any of His Messengers," and they say: "We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return." Allah burdens not a person beyond what he can bear. He gets the reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have the strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector, and help us against the disbelieving people.
“These two Verses will be sufficient for anyone who recites them at night before sleeping.” ( Al-Bukhari 5009)

3-Recite Surah Mulk before sleeping
The Prophet (SAWW) said, “A surah from Quran containing thirty verses will intercede for a man until he will be forgiven. It is surah Tabaarak alathi be yadi hil mulk” .(I.e Surah Al Mulk 67)
(Al Tirmidhi 2891, Abu Dawood 1400, Ibn Maajah 3786)
The benefit of this Sunnah:
It protects one from grave punishment:
The Prophet (SAWW) said, ‘Surah al Mulk is the protector from the torment of the grave ‘ (Sahihul Jamiea 1/680, Hakim 2/498 & Nasai)
And it will intercede for the reciter on the day of judgment.
Jabir (RA) said it was the custom of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) not to go to sleep until he had read Tabarakalladhi Biyadihil Mulk and Alif Laam Meem Tanzeel. (Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Darami)

The etiquettes of sitting while eating:
1-Do not lean while eating: Narrated Abu Juhaifa: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "I do not take my meals while leaning (against something). (Sahih al-Bukhari 5398)

3-Eating less :
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (SAWW) said, "A Muslim eats in one intestine (i.e. he is satisfied with a little food) while a Kafir (unbeliever) eats in seven intestines (eats much). (al-Bukhari 5396)
According to another Hadith: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one-third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.’ ( Ibn Majah 3474)
4- Licking the dish and the fingers: The Prophet (SAWW) ordered (us)
to lick the fingers and the dish and said: “you do not know in which (the morsel of the food) is the blessing ”.(Muslim 2033)

6-Sit while you are eating: It is advised to eat while sitting.

Sunnahs After eating:
1- Praise Allah after eating:
Praise Allah after eating, as Prophet(SAWW) said; “Verily, Allah is pleased with the slave, who eats a meal, then praises Him for it. (Muslim 2734).
Sunnah supplication after eating: Prophet(SAWW) used to praise Allah in these words;
(All praise is to Allah, Who Has fed me and provided me with this without any strength or power from myself).

The sum of the sunnahs of drinking would exceed twenty, and we should
notice drinks include all sorts of soft or hot drinks.
7-Don’t drink directly from the vessel: The Prophet (SAWW) forbade drinking from the mouth of the waterskin( in modern days we can say Jug, bottle, vessel or any container). Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5628) and Muslim (5629).
Benefits of this Sunnah:
If the water container is not transparent there may be an insect or any debris inside it which could cause harm or annoyance.
One may not be able to control the flow of water so the result could be in choking or wetting the cloths.
If one breaths in the vessel or drinks directly, there are chances of spreading germs or disease more-likely if others are sharing the same vessel.

The sunnan of Travelling

Sunnah way of Travelling:

1-Do not travel alone at night:
The Messenger of Allah (SAWW) said, "Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night."
(Al-Bukhari 2998)
2-Woman should accompany with Mehram on a long journey:
The Messenger of Allah (SAWW) said, "It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to make a journey of one day and night unless she is accompanied by a Mahram (husband or any other relative to whom she is prohibited to marry)."
( Muslim 1339).
The Prophet (SAWW) said, "No man must not be alone with a woman except in the presence of her (Mahram). No woman should travel except in the company of a (Mahram)." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have been enrolled for such and such expedition, and my wife left for Hajj." He (SAWW) said to him, "Go and perform Hajj with your wife."
(Al- Bukhari 1862 )
3-Supplication of travelling:
Glory to Him who has brought this [vehicle] under our control, though we were unable to control it [ourselves], and indeed, to Our Lord, we will surely return. (Muslim 1342)
It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) mounted his camel to set out on a journey, he would say Takbeer three times, then he would say:
Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. O Allaah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allaah, facilitate our journey and let us cover its distance quickly. O Allaah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor (the One Who guards them in a person’s absence) over the family. O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of heart and from being in a bad predicament, and I seek refuge with You from an ill-fated outcome with regard to wealth and family).
1-Supplication on returning back:
Upon returning recite the same above dua with the following addition:
آيِبـونَ تائِبـونَ عابِـدونَ لِرَبِّـنا حـامِـدون
” And when he returned he would say the same words,
Narrated by Muslim (Muslim 1342).

Sunnan of Majlis

The Sunnahs of Majlis(Gathering)
1: Ask for permission:
Before entering any place or any private gathering at a home, or private area or property, such as one’s room, one should ask for permission. Allah (SWT) says:
“O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome.” (An-Nur 24:27).
The Prophet (SAWW) said:
“Permission should be asked for three times; if you were given permission (then enter). Otherwise, go back.” (Musnad Ahmad 19175).
1-Say Salaam and greetings:
The Prophet (SAWW) said:
“When one of you comes to a gathering, let him say Salaam (greetings), and when he wants to leave let him say Salaam, for the former is not more of a duty than the latter.” (Abu Dawud 5208).
3-Making room for one another:
Allah (SWT) tells us that we should make room for others in Majlis. He (SWT) instructs us in the following verse:
“O you who believe! When you are told to make room in the assemblies, (spread out and) make room. Allah will give you (ample) room (from His Mercy).” (Al-Mujadilah 58:11).
Asking someone to give up his place:
4-Do not take over someone’s place:
It is not right to take over someone’s seat or ask someone to give up his space. The Prophet (SAWW) said:
“If one of you gets up from his spot and then comes back to it, he has more right to it.” (Muslim 2179).
5-Mentioning the Name of Allah in all gatherings:
This point is very important as the Prophet (SAWW) said:
“No group gathers in a sitting in which they do not remember Allah, nor send peace and blessings upon their Prophet (SAWW), except it will be a source of remorse for them. If He Wills, He will punish them, and if He Wills, He will forgive them.” (At-Tirmidhi 3380).
Carelessness and negligence from the remembrance of Allah in such gatherings bring misfortune and harden the hearts, this is really a scary situation.
6-Do not sit and talk on the pathways:
The Prophet (SAWW) said, "Beware! Avoid sitting on the roads (ways)." The people said, "There is no way out of it as these are our sitting places where we have talks." The Prophet (SAWW) said, "If you must sit there, then observe the rights of the way." They asked, "What are the rights of the way?" He said, "They are the lowering of your gazes (on seeing what is illegal to look at), refraining from harming people, returning greetings, advocating good and forbidding evil." (Al Bukhari 2465)
7- Supplicate before leaving the gathering:
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ
" Purity belongs to You. O Allah (SWT), with Your praises, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except You. I seek forgiveness from You and I repent to You)".
(Abou Dawood 4859, At Tirmidhi 3433)
You can say this dua as many times a day, as many people you meet in all day, these could be your relatives, neighbours, friends, colleagues, boss or employees etc. These meetings could be planned or just by coincidence. while standing for a few minutes with your classmates, or sitting with your family for a meal, chatting on phone or texting on internet, travelling with someone or attending a lecture/ a seminar, addressing a forum or busy at your work, always remember and praising Allah several times, this will keeps you in contact with Allah. Make sure to repent and ask for Allah’s forgiveness for whatever happens during those meetings.

Sunnan of Dressing and Undressing

The Sunnah way of changing clothes:
If you want to wear or take off your clothes:
1-Saying Bismillah: Say, Bismil Allāh (i.e. In the name of Allah), before you wear or take off your clothes. (No evidence is found but according to Imaam Nawawi, Tasmiah is preferred in all actions).
The wisdom behind this Sunnah: By saying bismillah the Jinn(and angels too) are unable to view the nakedness.
