The Sunnah way of changing clothes:
If you want to wear or take off your clothes:
1-Saying Bismillah: Say, Bismil Allāh (i.e. In the name of Allah), before you wear or take off your clothes. (No evidence is found but according to Imaam Nawawi, Tasmiah is preferred in all actions).
The wisdom behind this Sunnah: By saying bismillah the Jinn(and angels too) are unable to view the nakedness.
2-Supplication of wearing clothes: Before wearing the clothes, Prophet (SAWW) used to say a supplication:
“الحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ”
All Praise is for Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, with no power nor might from myself.
(Abu Dawood ,4023)
3-Start wearing by the right side: Always start wearing clothes from the right side . The Prophet(SAWW) said: “If you wear clothes to start with the right side”. (At-Termithi 1765, Abu Dawood 4141)
4-Start taking off clothes by left side: Upon taking off the clothes, start with the left side. (According to general evidence)
5- Dress code according to Sunnah and Sharee’ah: A Muslim/Muslimah should take good care of his/her clothes and dress code.
Muslim dress code is explained in the Quran and Ahadith. Just a few are mentioned below;
l For man, gold and silk is forbidden(Ibn Majah 3640). The Prophet(SAWW) forbade to resemble the Kufar(non-believers) in general, in clothing and in other ways( Abu Dawood 4031). Man’s garment should not hang down beneath his ankle(Bukhari, 5450). Dressing for fame and vanity, luxurious and extravagant clothes are not liked( Abou Dawood 4029, Ibn Majah 3606, 3607). Awrah should be always covered etc.
l For women, it should cover the whole body (Surah Al Aehzab 33- 59), it should be Non transparent or translucent, it is haram to wear see through clothes( Muslim 2128), it should be loose and not tight enough to show her figure, should not attract other with extraordinary decoration, it should not be perfumed, it should not resemble the dress of man or non believers, etc .
According to hadith; It is haraam for women and women to imitate each other in the way they dress, because the Prophet (SAWW) cursed the men who imitate women and the women who imitate men.”( al-Bukhaari, 5546)
The Prophet (SAWW)said:
“If you want to wear your shoes, start with the right foot and if you want to take it off, start with the left. Or you should either wear them both at the same time, or take them both off( means do not wear just one shoe).” (Muslim2096)
