How to perform Salah accoring to Sunnah?

Sunnah Actions performed in the prayer

Qayam
1- Raise the both hands (Rafa’a Yadain) at the following times:

When saying the first takbeer ( Takbeer Al-Ihraam)
Before bowing for ruku
After rising from ruku
After standing for the third raka’h (in the prayers that have four
Raka’hs.)

( Al bukhari 736, 737, 738. Al Muslim 390)

( Note:When raising and lowering the hands the fingers should be close together, stretched out and with the palms of the hand facing Qiblah. Raise the hands , either to the sides of shoulders or by the bottoms of the ears)( Al Bukhari , 736,737,738,2320,)

2-Place right hand on the left: While reciting place the right hand over the left or holding the left wrist bone with the right hand. ( Bukhari 740, Muslim 401)

3- Look towards the place of sujood: During Qiyam look towards the place of prostration.(Al Bayhaqee 9726, 3543, 3545)

4-Make a space between the foot: Separate your feet to a comfortable distance when standing.

Ruku
The Sunnah of Ruku’(Bowing)
1- Grasping the knees: Grasp the knees by both hands and while the   fingers are apart. (Abou Dawud 863)

2- Stretching the back: Extend the back so that it is flat. (Al Bukhari 828)

3- Level the head and back in a line: Make the head in the same level of the back i.e. avoid lowering or raising it. (Abou Dawud 730)

4- Separate arms from waist: Keep the upper arms away from the sides of the body.( At Timadhi 260)

Sujood
The Prophetic Actions (Sunnahs) of Prostration (Sujoud) are;
1- Separate arms and waist: To keep the upper arms away from the sides of the body .((Al Bukhari 828)

2- Separate the abdomen from thighs: Keep the stomach away from thighs.

3- Separate thighs from legs: Ensure the thighs are away from the shins.

4- Separate knees in prostration: Keep the gape between the knees.
(No specific evidence was found for above three points, however from the description of the prophet(SAWW)’s sajdah, he was not cramped up, but rather he was spread out.)

5- Make the feet standing erect: Keep the feet upright in Sajdah.( An Nasaaee 1099 and 1129)

6- Put the internal part of his hand on ground: Ensure thee toes face the Qiblah, so that the joints of the toes rest on the floor.(Al Bukhari 828)

7- Join the Feet togather: The feet should be joined together while prostrating.(Ibn Khuzaymah 641)

8- Place the hands beside the ears: Place the hands in line with shoulders or ears. (Ibn Khuzaymah 641)

9- Straighten the hands: The hands should be placed open on the floor.( Ibn Abi Shaybaah, vol 1, ch36, H5)

10-Ensure the fingers are closed: The fingers should be joined together(Ibn Khuzaymah 642, Al Bayhaqee 419)

11- Point the fingers towards Qiblah: The fingers should be directed towards Qibla. (Abou dawood 732)

Jalsa
Jalsa: Sitting between the two prostrations and after is called Jalsa. ( The duas/ supplications of jalsa are mentioned in verbal sunnahs of prayer.)
 It has two types:
Jalsa Al-Iqaa’: Holding the both feet erect and sitting on the heels. (This is only permitted for the sitting between the two prostration and not for the Tashahhud.)( Al Bukhari 6320, Al Muslim 2714)
Jalsa Al-Iftirash: Sitting with the the right foot erect and spreading out the left foot flat on the floor with the toes facing in the direction of Qiblah .(Al Bukhari 828)

It is Sunnah to lengthen the Jalsa as “Prophet(SAWW used to lengthen this sitting, until a person would say, perhaps he has forgotten( to continue).”(Al Bukhari 821)

One will sit in the position of Jalsa Al Iftirash In the first Tashahhud (Sitting after second and forth rakaa’hs), bending the left foot and sit on it and erect the right foot flat with toes facing towards Qiblah.

But after finishing the second prostration of First and third Rakaa’hs one will Sit briefly to rest ( which is called Jalsa al-Istiraahah) then stand up to start the second and forth Rakaah.
There are no supplications in Jalsa Istiraahah and the Sunnah is to sit briefly. (Al Bukhari 824)

The Final Tshahhud
The final tashahhud follows the exact same format as the middle tashahhud, except that it has extra parts at the end to finish the prayer.

"When the Prophet (SAWW) sat at the end of two rak'ah, he sat on the sole of his left foot and raised the right, and after the fourth he placed his left hip on the ground and spread out both his feet to one side." [Abū Dāwood: 730]

The final sitting has three forms:
i. Keep the right foot upright, making the left foot under the right shin, and to sit on ground.( Al Bukhari 828)
ii. Sit in the same position as above except that the right foot is not placed upright but follows the direction of the left one. (Muslim 579)
iii. Erecting the right foot, place the left leg between the shin and
thigh of the right leg. ( Abou Dawud 731)

Place the hands on thighs “The right hand on the right thigh, and the left hand on the left thigh, the hands should be outstretched and the fingers should be joined.
Connect the middle finger to the thumb to form a circle and Move the index finger “up and down’ from the beginning to the end of the Tashahhud. Focus the sight on the index finger.
Turn the face right and left upon finishing the prayer by Tasleem.

Tahajud

Qiyam ul Lail (Tahajud)

Qiyam means standing up or establishing and Lail means Night. Qayam ul Lail is the Night prayer which established before dawn and is Mustahab. The Prophet(SAWW) said:

“The most excellent fast after Ramadan is, fasting in the month of Allah, the month of Moharram, and the most excellent prayer after performing obligatory ones is the night prayer.”
(Muslim 1163)

1-Recomended Rak’ahs:
The preferred number of Rakah’s for the Tahajud is eleven or thirteen, with prolong standing. ( See Al Bukhari. 1138 )

It can be divided as following:
Nafilah of Layl
8 raka’ahs (in 2 by 2 raka’ats)
Salat al-Shaf’a
2 raka’ahs
Salat al-Witr
2 raka’ahs

2-Use Siwak: It is Sunna when praying at night to use Sewak.
(Al BUkhari 245)

2- Recomended Recitation:
When a person get up for Qiyam Ul Lail it is recomended for him to recite last 10 verses of Surah Aal-Imran from:
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ
(Aal-Imran 2 : 190 to 200).
(Al Bukhari 183, Al Muslim 763)

3- Supplication:
When waking up for night prayer, the Prophet (SAWW) used to read this dua after making Takbeer:

(O Allah, praise is to You. You are the Light of
the heavens and the earth and all that they contain. Praise is to
You, You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all
they contain. Praise is to You, You are the King of the heavens
and the earth. You are the Truth, Your Promise is true, and the meeting with you is true, Your Word is true, Paradise is true, Hell is true,
the Prophets are true and Muhammad(SAWW) is true and the hour is true,O Allah to you I believe and on you I have placed my trust and to you I have repented and over you I have disputed and to you I have turned for Judgement. So, forgive me for my sins that have turned for judgement, So, forgive me for the sins that have come to pass and my sins that will come to pass what I have concealed and what I have made in public. You are Al Muqadaddaim and Al Mu’akhkhir. There is no deity worthy of worship other than You ).
(Al Bukhari 1120, Muslim 769)

4- Start with 2 light Rak’ahs:
It is Sunnah to start the Night Prayer with two short Raka’s in order to become active and get ready to the following prayers. (Al Muslim 768)

6-Begin with Supplication:
It is Sunnah also to start the prayer at night by saying the following
prophetic supplication:

(O Allah, Lord of Jibrail, Mikail and Israfil, Maker of the heavens and the earth. Knower of the unseen and the seen. You judge between Your slaves regarding that in which they differ. Guide me to the truth regarding that in which there is difference, by Your leave. Surely, You guide whomever you please to the straight path).
( Sunan an-Nasa'i 1625)

5- Lengthen the Prayer:

It is Sunnah also to prolong the prayer, because the Prophet (SAWW) was asked: What is the best prayer? He said: “(The longer).”
( Muslim 756). The meaning of “longer” is prolonging standing (Qayaam) in prayer.

6- Ask Allah for refuge and Mercy after recitation:
It is Sunnah also to ask refuge in Allah The Almighty when you recite
a verse speaking about punishment, by saying ;
(I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of Allah),
and to ask the mercy of Allah when you recite a verse speaking about mercy, by saying:
(O Allah, I ask for Your favour),
and to glorify Allah when you recite a verse exalting Allah The Almighty by praising Him;
This is from the Hadith;
“...he read slowly ( with reflection). If he read a verse of glorification, he glorified Him. If he read a verse of request, he asked from Him. If he read a verse seeking refuge , he sought refuge in Him…”.(Muslim 772)

Benefits of Tahajud:Reward of Tahajud is Immense. Numerous Ahaadeeth and Qur'aanic verses mention the excellence of Qiyaam al-Layl and the merit of those who perform it regularly. Reward of Tahajud is Immense. Allah says in Quran,

“Verily, waking at night (for Tahajjud prayer) is extremely difficult ( but most effective for controlling the nafs), and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allaah)…”(al-Muzzamil 73:6)

“...Their sides part from their beds, to make Dua from their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend (in charity in Allaah’s Cause) out of what We have provided for them. No soul knows what pleasure is kept hidden for them( in Jannah) as a reward for what he carries out”. (al-Sajdah 32:16-17)

In Surah Furqaan Allah tells us the Qualities of Ibbad ur Rahmaan( Ar Rahmaan’s bondsmen) and one of the quality is,

“And those who spend the night in prostrating and standing before their Rabb.”( Al Furqaan 25:64)

Then He Almighty describes their reward in these beautiful words,

75.Those will be rewarded with the Balconies (in Paradise) because of their steadfastness(in Imaan and Islam). Where they will be met with greetings and the word of peace and respect.
76. They will live there( in Jannah) forever. It is surely a beautiful residence and abode.
(al-Furqaan 25:75-76)

Subhan Allah, What else shall one needs more than this?

Sunnah days of Fasting

With the end of the fasting month Ramadan, does not mean fasting also stopped, but is prescribed throughout the year.
The Muslim can observe a voluntary fast on any day of the year that he wishes, except those which are known to be forbidden. (The details of Forbidden days are given at end of this article)

1. Mondays and Thursdays:

It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (SAWW) was keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. ( al-Tirmidhi, 745; al-Nasaa’i, 2361; Ibn Maajah, 1739;Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1044)

The Messenger of Allaah (SAWW) was asked about fasting on Mondays. He said: “On that day I was born, and on it the Revelation came to me(Muslim, 1162)

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (SAWWW) said: “Deeds are shown (to the lord of the World) on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be shown when I am fasting.” ( al-Tirmidhi, 747)

Benefit: Fasting twice a week is not only Sunnah but in fact is said to be a healthy routine for your body. There are studies that show that intermittent fasting is an opportunity for the body to cleanse itself of waste and to increase one's metabolic rate, helping burn more calories and loose weight.

1. Fridays:

Fridays are the most blessed day of the week. When rewards of good deeds are multiplied and all supplications are accepted however, one should not fast Friday alone, but in combination with Thursday or Saturday.

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard the Prophet,(SAWW) say: "None of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts a day before or after it" (al-Bukhaari, 1849, Muslim, 1929)

3. The White Days (Ayam Al-Beedh):

The white days refer to the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the lunar calendar, so it may not be the same days each month of the solar Gregorian calendar.

It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Aas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (SAWW) said to me: “It is sufficient for you to fast three days every month, because for every good deed you will have (the reward of) ten like it, so that will be like fasting for a lifetime.” ( al-Bukhaari 1874 , Muslim 1159).]

It was narrated from Jareer ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (SAWW) said: “Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and ayaam al-beed are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.” ( al-Nasaa’i, 2420)

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (SAWW) said: The Prophet (SAWW) advised me to do three things which I will not give up until I die: fasting three days of each month, praying Duha and going to sleep after Witr. (al-Bukhaari 1124,  Muslim 721).

4. 6 Days in Shawal

The month of Shawwal immediately follows the month of Ramadan and offers a great opportunity to continue the good habits gained in Ramadan.

Abu Ayyoob reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime” (Muslim 1164).

Benifit:
It is easy to continue the routine of Ramadan.
Switching the eating habits so quickly after Ramadan can be difficult, so take advantages of both worlds by fasting in Shawal.

1. Day of Ashura and Muharram:

It is Sunnah to fast during this month, because of the hadeeth:
“The best of fasting after Ramadaan is the month of Muharram, and the best of prayer after the obligatory prayers is prayer at night (qiyaam al-layl).” (Muslim, 1163)

Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “I never saw Allah’s Messenger (SAWW) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of `Ashura’, and month of Ramadan.” (Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1867)

Narrated by Hadrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):“Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashura' in the Pre-lslamic period, and Allah's Apostle too, used to fast on that day. Later when the fasting of the month of Ramadan was prescribed, he gave up fasting on the day of 'Ashura' and it became optional for one to fast on it or not. (Al Bukhari ch 31, H220)

It is Sunnah to fast the day before or the day after along with ‘Aashoora’, in order to be differentiate from the Jews.

2. Arafah - 9th of Dhul-Hijjah

Fasting on the day of ‘Arafaah, (9th of Dhul-Hijjah) is highly recommended and mustahabb, as the Messenger of Allaah (SAWW) said:
“I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of ‘Arafaah may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming years, and I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of ‘Aashoora’ may atone for the sins of the preceding year.” (Muslim, 1162).

The first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah are definitely days of special blessings in which we are encouraged to exert ourselves vigorously in acts of devotion, worship, and righteous deeds. (See al-Bukhaari 969 )

7. Shaban
The month of Shaban precedes the month of Ramadan, and is an ample opportunity to prepare for Ramadan, both spiritually and physically.

‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger of Allah (SAWW) used to fast all of Sha’baan, he used to fast Sha’baan apart from a few days. (al-Bukhaari, 1970; Muslim, 1156).

(Note: It is not allowed to fast after halfway through Sha’baan except for those who observes fasts regularly or who are continuing after fasting before halfway through the month.)

“Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will keep his face seventy years’ distance from Hell,” (al-Nasaa’i, 2247; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan al-Nasaa’i, 2121).

Forbidden Days for Fasting:
Following are the days on which fasting is haraam
And these days of fasting Prohibition:
1. Fasting on the two Eid Days . Eid al-Fitr and Adha.
2. Fasting in mid-Hijjah (11, 12, 13 Dhu al-Hijjah/Ayam Al-TAshreeq).
3. Fasting during menstruation or childbirth in women.
4. Fasting is where prohibited by her husband.
5. Fasting for the sick that if he fasted then it will harm it.
6. Deliberately singling out Friday for fasting.

The Virtue of Fasting Sunnah
The virtues of fasting are immense, and a number of saheeh ahaadeeth state this, such as the following:

In Paradise there is a gate called Al-Rayyaan, through which those who fast will enter, and no-one else will enter through it. After they have entered, it will be locked and no-one else will enter it. (Al Bukhari 1763)

“Allah said: Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting; it is for me and I shall reward for it…”(Al bhukhari 1761, Al Muslim 1946)

Health benefits of Fasting:
Fasting;
Removes toxins from the body.
Relax the digestive organs.
Lowers blood pressure.
Lowers cholesterol levels.
Sooth the soul and help with mood disorder.
Improves insulin sensitivity.
Helps clear the skin and prevent acne.

Fasting has social benefits as well like:
Provide a sense of empathy for others who are less fortunate.

Sunnahs of Friday

Friday is the Best Day of the Week.

Prophet (SAWW) said:
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created; on it he was made to enter Paradise; on it he was expelled from it; and the (last) hour (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) will take place on no other day except Friday.” (Muslim 854)

1- Take a Bath (ghusl) and clean yourself:
Friday is a blessed day, one should take a bath and cleanse oneself as he/she is going to attend a special occasion.
Allah's Messenger (SAWW) said, "Anyone of you attending the Friday (prayers) should take a bath." (Al Bukhari 887,see also 894, 895,)
According to an other Hadith, ( Al Bukhari 879) Taking the bath on Friday is compulsory for every Muslim.
The Messenger of Allaah (SAWW) said: "...Take a bath on Friday, purify yourself as much as you can (I.e, cut the nails, trim the moustache and remove armpit hair),*..." (Al Bukhaari - Vol 2, Hadith 883)
“There are Five acts quite necessary for human Nature (Fitra), circumcision, shaving the pubes, cutting the nails, plucking the hair under the armpits and clipping the moustache.(Al Muslim 495)
(Do not forget to comb your hair nicely).

2:Use Miswak:
Take extraordinary care of oral cleanliness and make sure that your breath is fresh. Allah's Messenger (SAWW) said, "The taking of a bath on Friday is compulsory for every male Muslim who has attained the age of puberty and (also) the cleaning of his teeth with Siwaak, and the using of perfume if it is available." (Al Bukhari 880)

3:Apply oil and Perfume:
The Prophet (SAWW) said, "Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven."(Al Bukhari 883, 887, 888)

4:Wear nice clothes:
Friday congregation is a special time that requires Muslims to appear in the best manner possible. One should therefore put on his perfect and  clean garments for Friday prayer. It doesn't matter that if clothes are new or not but they should be spotless and washed.
“The people came for Jumu'a prayer from their houses in the neighbouring villages dressed in woollen garments on which dust was settled and this emitted a foul smell. A person among them (those who were dressed so) came to the Messenger of Allah (SAWW) while he was in my house. The Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) said to him: Were you to cleanse yourselves on this day”.(Al Muslim 847)
There is nothing wrong anyone of you if he can afford it buying two garments for Friday other than his daily work clothes.(Sunan Ibn Majah, vol1, Book5, H 1096)

5:Recite Surah Al Kahaf:
“Whoever reads surat Al-Kahf on the night of Friday, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (i.e., the Ka`bah).”
 (Narrated by al-Daarimi, 3407Authenticated by Al-Albani)
“Whoever recites Soorat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, he will be illuminated with light from one Friday to the next.”
(Narrated by al-Haakim, 2/399; al-Bayhaqi, 3/249)

6: Make Dua:
Do not miss the Golden opportunity to make du’a on Friday which is specially accepted and answered by Allah,
“On Friday there is a (Special) hour when, if a Muslims happens to pray at that time and ask Allaah for something good, He will give it to him.”  (Al-Bukhari 5295and Muslim 852) (see also Bukhari 893 Muslim, 852)

7:Walk (calmly and gracefully) to the mosque on foot:
Benefit of walking to mosque:"Anyone whose feet are covered with dust in Allah's cause, shall be saved by Allah from the Hell-Fire."(Al Bukhari 907)

8:Go for the Jumma prayer early:
There is a very beautiful hadith, Once Prophet (SAWW) said, "When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba."(Al Bukhari 929, see also 881)

9:Listen to the Khutbah carefully and quietly:
Benefit of following the sunnah: Allah's Messenger (SAWW) said, "Anyone who takes a bath on Friday and cleans himself as much as he can and puts oil or scents himself; and then proceeds for the prayer and does not force his way between two persons (assembled in the mosque), and prays as much as is written for him and remains quiet when the Imam delivers the Khutba, all his sins in between the present and the last Friday will be forgiven." (Al Bukhari 910, see also Muslim, 857 )

10:Send Durood on Prophet(SAWW) Abundantly:
“Verily, the best of days is Friday…so increase in conveying peace and blessings upon me on that day, for your blessings are presented to me...”
(Sunan Abi Dawud 1047,Ibn Khuzaimah 1733 and Ibn Hibban 910)

Friday Don’ts

1- Working during Friday Prayers:

Working during the Jummah Salah is prohibited, as soon as you hear the Adhaan on Friday, you should rush towards mosque and put a pause on every work you are doing at that time. As Allah says in Quran;

"O believers, when the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, come to the remembrance of Allah and leave off business, that is better for you if you but did know." [Al-Jumuah, 62:9]

2:Arriving late for Jummah prayer:
Plan ahead for Jummah Prayer in time so there will be no reason for you to be late to the Jummah Prayer, and thus there will be more chances to achieve higher ranks. (See Al Bukhari 907, 814 and Al Muslim 850)

3.Not listening to Khutbah:
People who do not listen to Khutbah with attention are missing out the entire reward of Praying Jummah. it is obligatory to listen the khutbah attentively.

4- Remain silent during the Khutbah:
It is prohibited to talk or distract others during Khutbah. Even when immam is delievering Khutbah ,one is not allowed to tell others to keep quiet .
“If you say to your companion: Listen attentively on a Friday when the Imam is delivering the khutbah, then you have engaged in idle talk.”
(Al-Bukhaari, 892; Muslim, 851)

5-Not Praying Jummah prayer:
Never miss Jummah prayer as Prophet(SAWW) said,“People must cease to neglect the Friday prayer or Allah will seal their hearts and then they will be among the negligent. .” (Muslim865)

1- Do not step over others:
Abu Dawood (1118) and Ibn Maajah (1115) narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Busr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “A man came and started stepping over the people one Friday when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was delivering the khutbah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him: “Sit down, for you have annoyed (people).”

Small Deeds big Reward Chart and Activity

House       in Jannah Quit the argue   Prophet Muhammad said (ﷺ) :“I guarantee a house in Jannah for one who...
